One and The Same

Varun and Vidya are brother and sister. Though they looked alike but their personalities were totally different. Varun loved to cook, he loved pink colour, he liked to read books and also play music. On the other hand, Vidya loved to play football, watch cricket matches, play video games and being out with her friends. Varun and Vidya used to argue and fight a lot but loved each other very much. Vidya loved to play football and cricket but her friend Sarah said “THESE GAMES ARE NOT FOR GIRLS” and that is why Vidya used to return home sadly. Over the years both Varun and Vidya grew up with the friends who were always telling them hobbies that were meant for girls and hobbies meant for boys. When both were 12 years old, one day their mother had to leave them as she had to attend an important meeting, so she handed the keys to Vidya (for her, girls were always more responsible than boys). Both Varun and Vidya were extremely happy to know that their parents won’t be around that day. Varun loved cooking, so he decided to cook dinner for all. He went in the kitchen and made vegetable fried rice, honey chili potato, vegetable chowmein and banana walnut muffins. The entire house was filled with the aroma of the food. Vidya was very impressed with her brother’s cooking skill. She told her brother that she wanted to play football in her apartment ground. Varun like always said that “football is not for girls” (as he was groomed with this thinking). Vidya retaliated and said, “if you can cook food then why can’t I play football”. Vidya wanted to prove Varun wrong so, she took Varun’s football and went down to have a match between herself and Varun’s friend Ajay. In the playground lots of children gathered to watch the match. Vidya kicks the ball and GOAL!!! In between the match Vidya got injured but still picked up the courage to play. Vidya scored 8 goals and wins all by herself. When Varun and Vidya were reaching home, Varun felt sorry for what he said to Vidya before. When they reached home, Vidya rummaging her hand inside the pocket to take the keys and unlock the house found that the keys were not there. Then she realized that she had left the keys in the house only. Varun tries to break the door by his effort but the door was too strong to break! “Very good” said Varun in anger. “what do we do now? It is all your carelessness. Mom had given you the responsibility of the keys thinking that you would take care and not to me” Vidya petrified and terrified runs down the stairs towards the help area in her block. She asked all the security people, “Do you have a ladder, or a master key?” The tall man with white beard and big moustache replied “yes, we do have a ladder but, why are you asking?” Vidya explained the entire problem to the head of the security. Then, they took the ladder and placed it under the window of their balcony of the second floor. The tall man asked Varun to climb the ladder as he thought that boys are mightier, stronger and braver than girls. However, Varun got scared while climbing up the ladder and he quickly rushed down. Vidya climbed up the ladder and went inside her house through the open balcony.  She opened the main door; they were finally inside. They thanked the security head, served him water and closed the door gently. The man walked away. Vidya teased Varun by calling him by the name “Scary Cat” and Varun threatened her by saying, “I will tell to mom and dad and you will get an earful”. After fighting and arguing with each other for a long time, they both got tired and started watching TV. When mom and dad both arrived, they saw that the food was ready, dinner table was laid down. Oh! What a taste there was in the food as all of them ate to their heart content, licking their fingers and burping. During the dinner, both Vidya and Varun narrated the entire episode of the day. Though Mom and Dad were very upset with Vidya for being irresponsible but they both were really proud and happy with their children; as Varun had made wonderful, delicious dinner and Vidya was a star football player of her society. Everyone can do anything but only if they have that courage in themselves. Now Vidya is the first football female player. Watching Vidya play is pleasing to everyone’s eyes specially Varun. He learns football from Vidya. Varun is a famous chef and Vidya learns cooking from him. Their parents are extremely proud of their children and happy that they had let their children follow their passion and hobby.   The End                                    author: Avishi Disclaimer: This story is written by my 10 and half year old daughter.
